AI pulls the labor market in two directions at once

AI also reduces the barriers to starting something new. The same technology that allows corporations to operate with fewer employees gives individuals the ability to function like small firms. A solo founder can now draft contracts, design marketing materials, and set up bookkeeping in an evening—tasks that once required hiring professionals or spending months learning.
Inside organizations, AI performs the kind of work that once employed millions: following procedures, coordinating between departments, handling administrative tasks. Recognizing problems no one has packaged for them. Identifying needs where people improvise solutions. Discovering their own strengths instead of competing on narrow measures. Designing and testing ideas that might fail. Handling unclear feedback. Acting with initiative rather than mere obedience.
Traditional schooling trains students to compete for limited opportunities—top class rankings, admission to selective colleges—on standardized terms. This made sense when the goal was securing one of a fixed number of corporate jobs. But entrepreneurship operates differently. It rewards those who find valuable but overlooked niches and who stand out rather than trying to outperform others at the same tasks.
