Despite favourable studies on effectiveness, many people may still desire to choose traditional campus education for social and cultural reasons. Informal learning is one of three forms of learning defined by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development . Indigenous governments are reluctant to take on the ongoing costs involved. There is also economic pressure from some parents, who prefer their children to earn money in the short term rather than work towards the long-term benefits of education. In most countries today, full-time education, whether at school or otherwise, is compulsory for all children up to a certain age.
Closures of schools and other learning spaces have impacted 94 percent of the world’s student population, up to 99 percent in low and lower-middle income countries. As of 30 September 2020 there were 27 countries that had localized school closures. In the United States, an estimated 55.1 million students were forced to cease in-person instruction as of 10 April 2020.
Diversity of U.S. Institutions
Around the world, children are deprived of education and learning for various reasons. Children living through economic fragility, political instability, conflict or natural disaster are more likely to be cut off from schooling – as are those with disabilities, or from ethnic minorities. In some countries, education opportunities for girls remain severely limited.
These include parents, local communities, religious leaders, NGOs, stakeholders involved in health, child protection, justice and law enforcement , media and political leadership. The conventional merit-system degree is currently not as common in open education as it is in campus universities, although some open universities do already offer conventional degrees such as the Open University in the United Kingdom. Presently, many of the major open education sources offer their own form of certificate. Open education has been called the biggest change in the way people learn since the printing press.
